You've heard about the "Warriors", the "Gladiators", the "Mudders" and such . . . but are you fit enough to be a "FARMER"??? July 21st 2012
For a number of years we have hosted races at Maize Valley as part of the Subway Challenge Series. They have included a Vines Wines and Pines Cross Country 1K kids race, 5K, 10K and cross country races for adults and also the Stomp the Grapes 1/2 Marathon.
NEW in 2011 we put the call out for people to come and get "Down and Dirty"
on the farm and it was a huge success. We put together a "Extreme"
race like many of the other races that go on across the country. Not the deadliest - But you will have a Good Time! New for 2012 will be a longer course, more obstacles, and smaller heats of runners.
The Farmathalon is about some good ole fashioned racing FUN and getting "Down and Dirty" on the farm. In 2011 the adventure race took victims through 12 grueling obstacles scattered amongst the vineyard, creek, woods and fields of Maize Valley during approximately a 5K run. For 2012 we will be adding more just because we can. You can also "Like" us on Face book. AND if you are on Face Book here is a link to some great Pics from 2011.
Before the day was over people were wanting to sign up for next year's race before we even thought about it!
Some of the obstacles include from 2011 included the following...
"Giddy-up through the grapes" - maneuver over and under hurdles through the vineyard rows.
"Hay Fever" - climb over a mountain of gigantic bales of hay
"Pine top Point" - a steep, grassy climb that gives you a great view of the whole farm.
"Muddy Muskrat Ravine Rappel" - take a "dip" in some of Hartville's finest, blackest soil.
"Killer Kreek Run" - your chance to rinse off some of that mud!
"Barn Buster Wall Climb" - you gotta go up and over this one, not your everyday roll in the hay
"Feeling Tired Yet?" - Nothing like a good old field of tires to test your agility.
"Mad Cow Mud Crawl" - On your belly thru one - watch out for the "Mad Cow" patties!
"Gett'n Schooled" - Run, jump, and ramp over the Maize Valley "haunted" school bus.
"Terror Tunnels" - Dark, smoky, dirty tunnels for you to crawl thru.
"Winding Woods" - Navigate through the natural wooded setting on paths.
"Maze Crazy" - Wind your way through the corn maze, up and down the maze tower getting lost is not an option!

We will be "tweaking" things for the July 21st 2012
event to improve the event based upon participant feedback and
knowledge learned in 2011. We do not strive to be just like those
"other mud based races". Yes our race gets you dirty and very tired we
put in a "farmer twist".
More "Hosing-off" stations for 2012! We heard ya!
Back in the day when the "brain trust" that runs Maize Valley Winery was at Ohio State on Ag. Campus we did a thing called "Ag. Olympics". It was a fun day where the Ag. Frats. and other Agricultural Campus organizations competed in bizarre events designed to challenge your senses, physical strengths and metal skills. Look for those to creep into the July 21st 2012 Farmathalon!
Finally I can use something I learned at college 30 years after I started there!
